Porcinara Cave

With the term Leukos the Greek sailors indicated the white cliff that gives its name to what we now call Leuca. It will then become Santa Maria di Leuca probably due to the cult linked to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae, the land that forms the border to the lands of the Romans.
In this strip of land you can admire high and jagged cliffs, small golden bays that interrupt the low rocks and the famous karst caves.

West side

Located 20 meters above sea level, it is a prehistoric cave not of natural origin but dug by man. Dedicated to the cult of pagan divinities, as evidenced by the discovery of 30 tables with inscriptions in Greek and Latin. This prestigious cave can be reached by land; it looks like a sort of “altar on the sea” where not only indigenous peoples, but also pilgrims or passing sailors, invoked the help and protection of the gods during their sea crossings.
